Diving: Around Koh Chang and near islands, there are several sites of beautiful shallow water reefs especially to the south of Koh Chang. You can either do snorkeling or scuba-diving. The coral reefs can be found from the sea floor to the depth of 25 meters. The best time of the year for diving is from October to late May. After that it will come Monsoon season which the water might be murky. There are plenty of species of marine life from hard to soft corals, various kinds of colorful fish, sea turtles, or even whale shark. Travelers can hire boat to visit diving sites in other islands such as Koh Wai, Koh Rung which can be done in one day trip. It might also include lunch, snacks and snorkeling equipments depending on the package. The cost is approximately not over a thousand Baht per person. The best place for checking out this service is in Bang Bao. Koh Chang also has PADI scuba-diving school. The 2-day introductory course costs around three thousand or ten thousand Baht for full course.
Water Sport: There are several water sports for visitors to enjoy on Koh Chang. Some of the most popular sports are kayaking, windsurfing, all of these can be found on most of the beaches, but the most comprehensive is on White Sand Beach. At Iyara restaurant which has a canal connecting to the beach, has several water sport equipment to service you. At night, there are various spots that offer kayaking trip to see fireflies. The fee is around hundred Baht per hour. The recommended sites for kayaking are on the canal near Iyara Restaurant and in front of Sea View Resort. Travelers can row the boat to Koh Mun cause at that spot closing together and the sea water is not too deep. Visitors can come and go safely.
Boat Trip: Boat trip can be found in several sites all over Koh Chang. There are both short and long trips. The short ones are trips to see small islands around the island, sunken ship spot. There are also many one day trips for snorkeling for visitors to choose from, and the longer ones are for visiting other islands such as Koh Wai, Koh Kood, Koh Kradat, Koh Mak and Koh Kradan. There are various types of services in public or hiring boat for private.
Kayaking: Visitors can hire the kayaking stuffs that available for many resort along the west coast of Koh Chang such as White Sand Beach, Khlong Prao Beach, Kai Bae Beach and etc. Each resort offers different and interesting sea routes for their customers to choose package.
Hiking:
Most of the area of Koh Chang is
mountainous and covering with beautiful tropical rain forest and many
streams. It became National Park since 1982. There are several hiking
routes, some are quite long such as Salak Phet mount which will need a
local guide. The most popular is short hiking ones to various beautiful
waterfalls namely:
-Khlong Plu Waterfall
is the largest cascading on Koh Chang with beautiful scenic all year
round. It is located on the east side of the island, on Khlong Prao
route. The National Park office is 2 kilometers from the main road.
Visitors then have to park vehicles here and hike into tropical rain
forest for another 500 meters. You will enjoy with the beautiful
natural plants which are deserted orchids and ferns. The top cataract
is 30 meters high and the water flows into a big pond that visitors can
have a good time in crystal clear water.
-Than Mayom is on the west of Koh Chang
island on Dan Mai route.
-Salak Petch travelers will have to park
transmission at National Park office provided Lot, and then walk about
200 meters passing through fruit orchards along the stream to the
cascade. We are recommended visitors should travel in rainy season, it
is very beautiful.
Elephant Trekking: On Koh Chang, trekking on a symbol of Koh Chang (elephant or Chang) will give you a memorable experience. You will be able to see the scenic from another vantage point. There are 2 places that you can trek the elephant. Chang Chutiman is popular and affordable will bring you to forest near Ban Khlong Prao, opposite Tropicana Resort. Another one is in Ban Khlong Son which located on far away from resorts.
Fireflies Sightseeing: Abundant of fireflies illuminating the night forests can be viewed in the island's mangroves during the cooler months (from November to January, actully all year round but less than mentioned months). Both side of Khlong Prao canal, when the sun down from the horizon. This river covered with the sparkling light of fireflies stayed on Lampoo tree and other trees along both bank of the canal.
